February 17, 2021US RETAIL SALES, JANUARY 2021 The US Census Bureau announced today that the advance estimates of U.S retail and food service sales increased 5.3% ($28.5 billion) to $568.2 billion in January 2021.
Excluding food services and drinking places, retail trade sales increased 5.1% ($25.0 billion) to $513.6 billion.
Food service and drinking place month-over-month receipts increased 6.9% ($3.5 billion) to $54.6 billion
Year-over-year (Jan-21 vs Jan-20, seasonally adjusted)
Retail trade and food services increased 7.4% ($39.3 billion)
Retail trade increased 10.8% ($50.2 billion)
Food services and drinking places sales decreased 16.6% ($10.9 billion)
Compared to February 2020, retail trade and food service sales were up 7.8% in January 2021. Retail trade was 11.2% higher in January 2021 versus February 2020, while food services and drinking places sales were down 16.4%.

Sales were up in 9 of 13 retail categories, the fastest gain (in percentage terms) being reported in Non-store Retailers (28.7%). The largest decline (in percentage terms) was seen in Food Services (-16.6%).
