EU AND EURO AREA RETAIL TRADE, MAY 2020

 

In the European Union, on a month-over-month basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were up 16.4 per cent in May 2020 over April 2020. In the Euro Area, retail sales were up 17.8 per cent in May 2020.

In the European Union, on a year-over-year basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were down 4.4 per cent in May 2020 vs May 2019. In the Euro Area, Retail sales were down 5.2 per cent in May 2020 vs May 2019.

By member state,

In the European Union May 2020 vs May 2019, where data is available, the strongest growth in year-over-year retail sales occurred in:

  • Germany (+7.3%)
  • Denmark (+6.6%)
  • Austria (+4.7%)
  • Finland (+4.6%)
  • Netherlands (+3.7%)

The weakest growth occurred in

  • Bulgaria (-18.7%)
  • Spain (-18.0%)
  • France (-13.1%)
  • Portugal (-13.1%)

By retail sector,

In the Euro Area, by retail sector, the strong growth in May 2020 vs May 2019 is found in

  •  Food, beverage, tobacco (+7.6%)

The largest decline occurred in

  • Clothing, footwear (-51.1%)
  • Automotive fuel (-39.4%)
  • Computers, telecommunications (-29.0%)

In the European Union, by retail sector, the strong growth in May 2020 vs May 2019 is only found in

  • Food, beverage, tobacco (+7.1%) 

The largest decline occurred in

  • Clothing, footwear (-49.0%)
  • Automotive fuel (-37.6%)
  • Computers, telecommunications (-25.7%)

 

Mail and internet sales were up 30.5% in the Euro Area.  Mail and internet sales were up 31.8% in the European Union.
