July 02, 2020US EMPLOYMENT, JUNE 2020 The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported an increase in US non-farm payroll employment, increasing by 4.8 million from May to June 2020.
The US unemployment rate has fallen 2.2 percentage points to 11.1 per cent. These improvements in the labor market reflected a continued resumption of economic activity that had been curtailed in March and April due to the COVID-19 and efforts to contain it.
Employment fell by 22.2 million in March and April combined. Despite the monthly increase, nonfarm employment in June was 9.6 percent below its February level. The strongest employment increases occurred in leisure and hospitality, retail trade, education and health services, other services, manufacturing, and professional and business services in June 2020. Employment continued to decline in mining.
The US unemployment rate declined by 2.2 percentage points to 11.1 per cent in June. US unemployment decreased by 3.2 million to 17.8 million in June. Although unemployment decreased in May and June, the US unemployment rate increased by 7.6 percentage points and the number of unemployed persons increased by 12.0 million since February 2020 due to COVID-19 and efforts to contain it.
The US participation rate increased 0.7 percentage point to 61.5 per cent of the working age population but is still 1.9 percentage points below its February level.
The US employment to population ratio was up by 1.8 percentage point to 54.6 per cent in June but 6.5 percentage points lower than its February level.
The reference week for the US household survey was June 7th through June 13th.
