UK RETAIL SALES, MAY 2020

The UK Office for National Statistics reports that UK retail sales partially rebounded in May 2020 when compared with the record falls experienced in the previous month, but sales were still down 14.6 per cent compared to February 2020 before the impact of the COVID-19.                                                                                                               

  • Month over month retail sales values increased 11.8 per cent while the retail sales volume (adjusted for price changes) increased 12.0 per cent over April 2020.
  • Year-over-year retail sales values decreased 14.2 per cent and retail sales volumes decreased 13.1 per cent over April 2019. 

The Office for National Statistics noted that all measures showed declines except monthly increase for both value and volume sales in May 2020. In March to May 2020, value of sales declined by 14.1 per cent and volume of sales by 12.8 per cent, the biggest decline on record compared with the previous three months.

Internet sales

  • Year-over-year Internet Sales increased by 30.8 per cent over May 2019.
  • Online sales share of all retail sales increased from 19.6 per cent in February 2020 to 33.4 per cent in May 2020.
