US RETAIL SALES, JANUARY 2020

The US Census Bureau announced today the advance estimates of US retail and food service sales for January 2020.  There was a seasonally adjusted 0.3 per cent increase ($1.4 billion) over December 2019 to $529.8 billion, and a 4.4 per cent increase over January 2019.

 

Excluding food services and drinking places, retail trade sales increased 0.1 per cent over December 2019, and increased 4.0 per cent over January 2019.  Food service and drinking place receipts increased 1.2 per cent to $66.5 billion.

Year-To-Date

In Jan-2020, United States seasonally adjusted Retail Trade & Food Services increased 4.4 per cent over Jan-2019. Retail trade increased 4.0 per cent and food services and drinking places sales increased 7.4 per cent.

SECTOR ANALYSIS

Sales were up in 8 of 12 retail categories, the fastest gains (in percentage terms) being reported in Gas Stations (10.4%), Miscellaneous (9.5%), and Non-store Retailers (8.4%).  The largest declines (in percentage terms) were seen in Sporting and recreation (-1.8%), Health & Personal (-1.9%) and Electronics stores (-3.2%). 

Sales were up in the  food services category: Food Services and Drinking Places (7.4%).  

In Jan 2019 vs Jan 2020,

Retail Trade , 87.4% of total retail trade & food services, increased 4.0% ($17.7 billion)  to  $463 billion.

  • Motor vehicle sector, 20.1% of total retail trade & food services, increased 5.7% ($5.8 billion).  
  • Furniture stores, 1.8% of total retail trade & food services, increased 1.8% ($0.2 billion).
  • Electronics stores, 1.5% of total retail trade & food services,  decreased 3.2% (-$0.3 billion). 
  • Building materials, 6.2% of total retail trade & food services, decreased 1.3% ($0.4 billion).
  • Food and beverage stores 12.4% of total retail trade & food services, increased 2.3% ($1.5 billion).
  • Heath, personal care stores 5.5% of total retail trade & food services,  decreased 1.9% (-$0.6 billion). 
  • Gasoline Stations, 8.3% of total retail trade & food services, increased 10.4% ($4.2 billion).  
  • Clothing stores, 4.2% of total retail trade & food services, were unchanged ($0.0 billion).
  • Sports and hobby stores, 1.2% of total retail trade & food services,  decreased 1.8% (-$0.1 billion).  
  • General merchandise stores, 11.4% of total retail trade & food services, increased 2.1% ($1.2 billion).  
  • Miscellaneous retail 2.2% of total retail trade & food services, increased 9.5% ($1.0 billion). 
  • Non-store retailers,12.5% of total retail trade & food services, increased 8.4% ($5.1 billion).
  • Food services, drinking places 12.6% of total retail trade & food services, increased 7.4% ($4.6 billion).
