EU AND EURO AREA RETAIL TRADE, DECMEBER 2019 AND 2019 ANNUAL

In the European Union, on a month-over-month basis , Retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were down 0.9 per cent in December 2019 over November 2019.

In the Euro Area, Retail sales were down 1.3 per cent in December 2019.

In the European Union, on an annual, Retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were up 3.1 per cent in 2019 vs 2018.
In the Euro Area, Retail sales were up 2.6 per cent in 2019 vs 2018.

 

By member state

In the European Union 2019 vs 2018, where data is available,  the strongest growth in 2019 vs 2018 retail sales occurred in

  • Romania (10.4%) ;
  • Hungary (9.1%)  ;
  • Poland (6.4%) ;
  • Lithuania (6.3%) ;
  • Estonia (6.1%)  ,

and the weakest growth occurred in

  • Slovakia (0.8%) ;
  • Denmark (1.0%) ;
  • Belgium (1.8%) ; and
  • Austria (2.0%) .

By retail sector

In the European Union, by retail sector, the strongest growth in 2019 vs 2018 is found in

  • Mail and internet sales (11.3%) followed by
  • Pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetic (4.4%), and
  • Computers, telecommunications (3.5%); 
  • Hardware, appliances (3.2%);
  • Food, beverage, tobacco (2.7%);
  • Automotive fuel (1.4%).

The lowest growth was in Clothing, footwear (1.1%)

In the Euro area, by retail sector, the strongest growth in 2019 vs 2018  is found in

  • Mail and internet sales (9.4%) followed by
  • Computers, telecommunications (3.5%), and
  • Pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetic (3.0%);
  • Hardware, appliances (2.8%); 
  • Food, beverage, tobacco (2.0%); 
  • Clothing, footwear (0.8%).

The lowest growth was in Automotive fuel (0.6%).
