US CONSTRUCTION SPENDING, DECEMBER 2019

In December 2019, US construction spending (seasonally adjusted annual rate) decreased 0.2 per cent to $1,328 billion. This follows a revised gain of 0.7 per cent reported in November 2019, when construction spending totaled $1,330 billion. Total Residential constructionincreased 1.4 per cent to $548 billion. Total Non-residential construction spending decreased 1.2 per cent to $780 billion.

Year-over-year, spending is 5.0 per cent above December 2019.

Private sector construction decreased 0.1 per cent to $991 billion, and is up 2.9 per cent over December 2019.

  • Private residential construction increased 1.4 per cent to $541 billion, and is up 5.5 per cent over December 2019.
  • Private non-residential construction spending decreased 1.8 per cent to $450 billion, and decreased 0.1 per cent over December 2019.

Public sector construction decreased 0.4 per cent to $336 billion, and is up 11.5 per cent over December 2019.

  • Public residential construction increased 2.3 per cent to $7 billion, and is up 29.6 per cent over December 2019.
  • Public non-residential construction spending decreased 0.4 per cent to $329 billion, and up 11.2 per cent over December 2019.

Annual US construction spending is down 0.2 per cent in 2019 to 15.7 trillion

  • Private sector construction is down 2.5 per cent to $11.7 trillion
  • Public sector construction is up 7.3 per cent to $3.9 trillion
  • Total Residential construction is down 4.7 per cent to $6.3 trillion
  • Total Non-residential construction is up 3.0 per cent to $9.4 trillion
