CROWDSOURCED CANNABIS PRICES, Q4 2019

The total average price of cannabis was $10.30 per gram in Canada for the fourth quarter of 2019, up from $9.69 per gram in the fourth quarter 2018.

Prices for both medical and unlicensed non-medical use cannabis declined from 2014 to 2017. From Q4 2018 through 2019 Q3, the non-medical licensed price index has exceeded medical and non-medical unlicensed price indexes. Medical use prices have been increasing, while unlicensed non-medical prices have continued to fall.

When comparing 2019 to 2018 using Statistics Canada self-reported crowd sourced website (StatsCannabis) average prices are up in all provinces except British Columbia. In percentage terms, the largest price increases were reported for New Brunswick (+26.5%), Manitoba (+26.3%) and Alberta (+20.6%). Note, submissions to the website are substantially lower in 2019 than 2018.

In Nova Scotia, the average price of cannabis was $8.26 per gram in 2019, up from $7.31 per gram for in 2018. For 2019, the highest average prices were reported in Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan.

The price gap between legal and illegal sources has increased since Q4 2018. For Canada, legal sources prices increased from $9.69/gram to $10.30/gram and illegal source price fell from $6.44/gram to $5.73/gram compared to a year earlier. Based on the self-reported data to StatsCannabis, prices were higher for legal source cannabis in all provinces in 2019.

Statistics Canada collects price and use data on cannabis through a crowdsourcing application, StatsCannabis.  As the data sample is self-selected, it is subject to statistical bias and not necessarily representative of the larger population.  Furthermore, monthly sample sizes have varied considerably, which also subjects the data to statistical bias.
