US HOUSING STARTS AND BUILDING PERMITS, DECEMBER 2019 AND ANNUAL 2019

BUILDING PERMITS

US residential building permits decreased 3.9 per cent in December compared to the revised November estimate, to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 1,416,000. This is 5.8 per cent above the December 2018 estimate of 1,339,000.

Year over year (Dec-19 vs Dec-18), permits for single unit structures increased 10.8 per cent. Permits for structures with 5 units or more decreased 3.0 per cent and permits for structures with 2 to 4 units increased 5.0 per cent over December 2018.

For 2019 compared to 2018, building permits increased 3.9 per cent. Permits are only up 0.1 per cent for single unit structures but roes 10.4 per cent for structures with 2 to 4 and by 10.8 per cent for structures with 5 units or more.

HOUSING STARTS

US housing starts increased 16.9 per cent in December compared to the revised November estimate, to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 1,608,000. This is 40.8 per cent above the December 2018 estimate of 1,142,000.

Year over year (Dec-19 vs DEc-18), starts for single unit structures increased 11.2 per cent, and starts for structures with 5 or more units increased 32.0 per cent.

For 2019 compared to 2018, housing starts increased 3.2 per cent with increases in starts for single unit structures (1.4 per cent), and an increases in starts for structures with 5 or more units (7.8 per cent).
