US CONSUMER PRICE INDEX, DECEMBER 2019 AND 2019 ANNUAL

The US Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers rose 0.2 per cent in December (seasonally adjusted growth from November). This month, the indexes for gasoline, shelter, and medical care rose, accounting for most of the increase in in all items index.       

Year over year (December 2019 compared to December 2018) consumer prices were up 2.3 per cent (not seasonally adjusted), with the energy costs rising 3.4 per cent and food prices up 1.8 per cent. The all items less food and energy index rose 2.3 per cent, year over year.

 

On an annual average basis, US inflation including all items was 1.8 per cent. Compared with Jan-Nov averages for Canada and Nova Scotia, US inflation in 2019 was slower than Canada's inflation, but faster than inflation observed for Nova Scotia.
