EU AND EURO AREA RETAIL TRADE, AUGUST 2019

In the European Union, on a month-over-month basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were up 0.2 per cent in August 2019 over July 2019. In the Euro Area, retail sales were up 0.3 per cent in August 2019.

In the European Union, on a year-to-date basis, retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were up 3.4 per cent in Jan-Aug 2019 vs Jan-Aug 2018. In the Euro Area, Retail sales were up 2.7 per cent in Jan-Aug 2019 vs Jan-Aug 2018.

By member state

In the European Union Jan-Aug 2019 vs Jan-Aug 2018, where data is available, the strongest growth in year-to-date retail sales occurred in:

  • Romania (10.4%)
  • Hungary (9.1%)
  • Slovenia (7.6%)
  • Lithuania (7.1%)
  • Estonia (6.7%)

The weakest growth occurred in

  • Denmark (1.2%)
  • Slovakia (1.7%)
  • Belgium (1.8%)
  • Austria (2.1%)

By retail sector

In the Euro Area, by retail sector, the strongest growth in Jan-Aug 2019 vs Jan-Aug 2018 is found in

  • Computers, telecommunications (3.5%) followed by
  • Hardware, appliances (2.9%), and
  • Pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetic (2.5%);
  • Automotive fuel (2.2%);
  • Food, beverage, tobacco (2.0%).
  • The lowest growth was in Clothing, footwear (0.2%).

Mail and internet sales were up 9.6% in the Euro Area.

In the European Union, by retail sector, the strongest growth in Jan-Aug 2019 vs Jan-Aug 2018 is found in

  • Pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetic (4.5%) followed by
  • Computers, telecommunications (3.6%), and
  • Hardware, appliances (3.4%);
  • Automotive fuel (3.1%);
  • Food, beverage, tobacco (2.7%).
  • The lowest growth was in Clothing, footwear (1.0%)

Mail and internet sales were up 11.8% in the European Union.
