US CONSTRUCTION SPENDING, AUGUST 2019

In August 2019, US construction spending (seasonally adjusted annual rate) increased 0.1 per cent to $1,287 billion. This follows a revised gain of 0.02 per cent in July. Year-over-year, US construction spending is 1.9 per cent below August 2018.

  • Private sector construction was virtually unchanged at $955 billion.  This is down 4.0 per cent over August 2018.
  • Public sector construction increased 0.4 per cent to $332 billion.  This is up 4.6 per cent over August 2018
  • Residential construction increased 0.9 per cent to $513 billion.  This is down 5.0 per cent over August 2018. 
  • Non-residential construction declined 0.4 per cent to $774 billion.  This is up 0.3 per cent over August 2018.

Year-to-date, US construction spending is down 2.1 per cent over January-August 2018.

  • Private sector construction decreased 4.6 per cent
  • Public sector construction increased 5.9 per cent
  • Residential construction declined by 8.5 per cent
  • Non-residential construction grew by 2.6 per cent
