JAPAN CPI INFLATION, JULY 2019

Japan's CPI inflation (all items, year-over-year) decelerated again to 0.6 per cent in July 2019.

Both energy (0.5 per cent) and food (1.0 per cent) price growth slowed in July. Japan's underlying inflation held steady at 0.6 per cent (all items excluding fresh food and energy).

Inflation has slowed in many advanced economies as oil prices abated, with year-over-year price growth slowing for Canada, Nova Scotia and Japan since last summer.  There have been signs of faster inflation in recent months, though Japan's inflation remains lower than most advanced economies.

As of July, Japan's all items CPI has reported positive year-over-year inflation for 34 months.  This is the longest run of positive inflation for Japan since the early 1990s.
