NOVA SCOTIA - INTERNATIONAL MERCHANDISE TRADE JUNE 2019

Year-to-Date (Jan-Jun 2019 vs. Jan-Jun 2018, customs-based, unadjusted)

In Jan-Jun 2019, Nova Scotia International Merchandise Trade Exports increased 7.1% ($207.2 million) over Jan-Jun 2018, to $3.1 billion.

YTD - By Sector

Comparing Nova Scotia's exports for Jan-Jun 2019 with the same period last year the largest dollar value increases were in Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food (+$125.2 million), Consumer Goods (+$59.1 million), and Machinery/equipment (+$41.8 million). The largest dollar value decreases were in Forestry/Building and Packaging Materials (-$45.7 million), Energy ($17.2 million) and Metal/Mineral Products (-$15.2 million).

 

On a year-to-date basis, export values increased in:

  • Machinery/Equipment by 72.8%  (+$41.8 million)
  • Metal/Ores by 35.1%  (+$11.4 million)
  • Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food by 22.1%  (+$125.2 million)
  • Consumer Goods by 8.1%  (+$59.1 million)
  • Transportation Equipment by 8%  (+$2.3 million)
  • Motor vehicles/Parts by 5.9%  (+$38.8 million)
  • Special Transactions by 5.8%  (+$1.6 million)
  • Electronics by 4.5%  (+$3.6 million)
  • Chemical, plastic, rubber by 0.9%  (+$1.5 million)

and export values decreased in

  • Forestry/Building/Packaging Materials by 11%  (-$45.7 million)
  • Metal/Mineral Products by 13%  (-$15.2 million)
  • Energy by 64.5%  (-$17.2 million)

 YTD by Province

In Jan-Jun 2019, Newfoundland and Labrador reported the highest increase (+17.4%), while New Brunswick reported the largest decline (-7.4%) in merchandise trade exports over Jan-Jun 2018. Nova Scotia reported a 7.1% gain in merchandise trade exports over the same period last year, behind only Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island. Canada reported a 2.3% gain in merchandise trade exports over Jan-Jun 2018.

Excluding energy exports, Newfoundland and Labrador reported the highest increase (+57.1%) while British Columbia reported the only decrease (-5.2%) in non-energy exports over Jan-Jun 2018. Nova Scotia reported a 7.8% gain in non-energy exports. Canada reported a 2.3% gain in non-energy exports over Jan-Jun 2018.

Nova Scotia’s trade continues to diversity. 

In Nova Scotia  Jan-Jun 2019, international export trade to all countries  increased 7.1% over Jan-Jun 2018 to $3.114 billion.

Over Jan-Jun 2019, Nova Scotia's $3.114 billion in international merchandise exports were accounted for by shipments of:

 

  • Consumer Goods with a value of $788.4 million (25% share),
  • Motor vehicles/Parts with a value of $700.9 million (23% share), followed by
  • Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food with a value of $692.1 million (22% share),
  • Forestry/Building/Packaging Materials with a value of $369.1 million (12% share),
  • Chemical, plastic, rubber with a value of $166.9 million (5% share),
  • Metal/Mineral Products with a value of $101.7 million (3% share),
  • Machinery/Equipment with a value of $99.2 million (3% share),
  • Electronics with a value of $83.0 million (3% share),
  • Metal/Ores with a value of $43.8 million (1% share),
  • Transportation Equipment with a value of $30.8 million (1% share),
  • Special Transactions with a value of $28.7 million (1% share), and
  • Energy with a value of $9.5 million (less than 1% share).

 

 

In the period Jan-June 2018 vs Jan-June 2019, year-to-date export trade to the United States increased 6.8% (+$124.7 million) to $1.97 billion. The United States share of total Nova Scotia exports was 63.2%.

 

Year-to-date export trade to China increased 27.6% (+$107.9 million) to $498.6 million. China share of total Nova Scotia exports was 16.0%.

 

Year-to-date export trade to selected Asia countries (excluding China) increased 5.7% (+$11.6 million) to $215.6 million with a mix of increases and decreases. Exports increased for: South Korea up $12.8 million to $60.5 million; Hong Kong up $8.4 million to $48.2 million; India up $1.8 million to $18.6  million; Singapore up $12.0 million to $22.7 million. Exports decreased among: Japan down $2.3 million to $45.5 million; Taiwan down $2.9 million to $6.9 million;  Indonesia down $18.2 million to $13.3  million. Other Major Asian share of total Nova Scotia exports was 6.9% over Jan-Jun 2019.

Year-to-date export trade to selected Europe countries increased 3.3% ($6.5 million) to $201.2 million. Nova Scotia exports increased for: United Kingdom up $0.9 million to $41.8  million;  Germany up $11.7 million to $30.7 million;  Italy up $2.4 million to $8.5million;  France up $5.4 million to $40.5 million;  Belgium up $6.0 million   to $21.9 million. Exports were lower for: Netherlands down $12.0 million to $38.2  million; Spain down $8.0 million to $19.6 million. Major European countries share of total Nova Scotia exports was 6.5%.

Year-to-date export trade to Other countries decreased -16.0% (-$43.5 million) to $229.0 million. Exports increased for: Brazil up $0.1 million to $7.1 million; Switzerland up $0.8 million to $4.4 million. Nova Scotia exports decreased for several countries including: Australia down $16.9 million to $7.6 million; Iraq down $0.8 million to $2.6 million; Mexico down $11.9 million  to $30.0 million; Norway down $0.1 million to $9.1 million; Peru down $0.4 million to $0.32 million; Russian Federation down $0.7 million to $1.6 million; Saudi Arabia down $1.3 million to $0.5 million; Turkey down $8.4 million to $4.7 million; all other shipment destinations were down $3.8 million to $161.2 million. Other countries share of total Nova Scotia exports was 7.4%
