EU AND EURO AREA RETAIL TRADE, JUNE 2019

In the European Union, on a month-over-month basis , Retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were up 1.2 per cent in June 2019 over May 2019. In the Euro Area, Retail sales were up 1.1 per cent in June 2019.

In the European Union, on a year-to-date basis, Retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were up 3.3 per cent in Jan-Jun 2019 vs Jan-Jun 2018. In the Euro Area, Retail sales were up 2.6 per cent in Jan-Jun 2019 vs Jan-Jun 2018.

In the European Union Jan-Jun 2019 vs Jan-Jun 2018, where data is available, the strongest growth in year-to-date retail sales occurred in Romania (10.4%); Hungary (9.1%); Slovenia (8.3%); Lithuania (7.8%); Estonia (6.9%), and the weakest growth occurred in Italy (0.9%); Belgium (1.0%); Denmark (1.2%); and Austria (1.7%).

By retail sector

In the Euro Area, by retail sector, the strongest growth in Jan-Jun 2019 vs Jan-Jun 2018 is found in Computers, telecommunications (3.9%), followed by Automotive fuel (2.9%); Pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetic (2.8%); Hardware, appliances (2.5%); Food, beverage, tobacco (1.9%). The lowest growth was in Clothing, footwear (-0.1%). Mail and internet sales increased 8.6% in the Euro Area in Jan-June 2019.

In the European Union, by retail sector, the strongest growth in Jan-Jun 2019 vs Jan-Jun 2018 is found in Pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetic (5.3%), followed by Computers, telecommunications (3.8%); Automotive fuel (3.6%); Hardware, appliances (3.1%); Food, beverage, tobacco (2.6%). The lowest growth was in Clothing, footwear (0.8%). Mail and internet sales increased 11.1% in the European Union in Jan-June 2019.
