In Nova Scotia May 2019, seasonally adjusted Manufacturing Shipments increased 12.5% to $849.0 million over April 2019, and increased 11.1% over May 2018.

Nova Scotia manufacturing shipments have been on an upward trend since the beginning of 2014 with rising durable (i.e. wood products, metal products, machinery, transportation equipment) and rising non-durable (i.e. food, paper/pulp, chemical, plastic and rubber) shipments. Seasonally adjusted non-durable shipments have risen from $405.4 million in January 2014 to $579.7 million in May 2019. Durable shipments have increased from $170.1 million in January 2014 to $269.3 million in May 2019.

CANADA

In Canada May 2019, seasonally adjusted Manufacturing Shipments increased 1.6% to $58.9 billion over April 2019, and increased 3.0% over May 2018. The monthly increase was mainly due to higher sales in transportation equipment.

Compared to April 2019, overall sales rose in 12 of 21 industries representing 66.2% of all manufacturing sectors. Durable goods increased 3.0% to $30.9 billion over Apr 2019, and increased 1.5% over May 2018. Non-durable goods increased 0.1% to $28.0 billion over Apr 2019, and increased 4.7% over May 2018.

Inventory to sales ratio edged down to 1.51 in May. Unfilled orders rose 0.5% to $100.4 billion. The rise in unfilled orders in May was largely due to higher unfilled orders in the aerospace product and parts industry, partially offset by lower unfilled orders of machinery and fabricated metal products.
