In May 2019, the Canadian merchandise trade (balance of payment basis, seasonally adjusted) balance moved from deficit to surplus position of $762.3 million. This is the second monthly trade surplus reported since December 2016. Exports are up 4.6% to $53.1 billion over April 2019, and are up 8.6% over May 2018. Imports are up 1.0% to $52.3 billion over April 2019, and are up 1.1% over May 2018.
YEAR-TO-DATE
In the period Jan-May 2019, the year-to-date Canadian merchandise trade deficit reached $9.2 billion. Year-to-date goods Exports were valued at $250.4 billion and year-to-date goods Imports were valued at $259.6 billion .
TRADE PARTNERS
In May 2019, the Canadian merchandise trade (balance of payment basis, seasonally adjusted), surplus with the United States widened to $5.9 billion.
In May 2019, the Canadian merchandise trade (balance of payment basis, seasonally adjusted), deficit with China narrowed to $1.6 billion.
In May 2019, the Canadian merchandise trade (balance of payment basis, seasonally adjusted), deficit with the European Union widened to $1.9 billion.
