JAPAN CPI INFLATION, MAY 2019

Japan's CPI inflation (all items, year-over-year) decelerated slightly to 0.8 per cent in May 2019.

Energy price growth slowed again to 3.7 per cent while food price inflation was steady at 0.8 per cent per cent. Japan's underlying inflation edged down to 0.5 per cent in May (all items excluding fresh food and energy).

Inflation has been slowed in many advanced economies as oil prices abated.  Year-over-year price growth has slowed for Canada, Nova Scotia and Japan since last summer.  There have been signs of faster inflation in recent months, though Japan's inflation remains slower than price growth in most advanced economies.

As of May, Japan's all items CPI has reported positive year-over-year inflation for 32 months.  This is the longest run of positive inflation for Japan since the early 1990s, bettering the 31-month streak set in 2013-2015 (sales taxes were raised in 2014).
