MANUFACTURING SHIPMENTS, APRIL 2019

NOVA SCOTIA

Month-over-month

In Nova Scotia April 2019, seasonally adjusted Manufacturing Shipments decreased 0.8% to $742.6 million over March 2019 and decreased 2.8% over April 2018.

Nova Scotia manufacturing shipments have been on an upward trend since the beginning of 2014 with rising durable (i.e. wood products, metal products, machinery, transportation equipment) and rising non-durable (i.e. food, paper/pulp, chemical, plastic and rubber) shipments. Seasonally adjusted non-durable shipments have risen from $405.4 million in January 2014 to $531.2 million in April 2019. Durable shipments have increased from $170.1 million in January 2014 to $211.4 million in April 2019.

Year-to-date

In Nova Scotia Jan-Apr 2019, seasonally adjusted Manufacturing Shipments increased 2.4% ($70.0 million) to $3.0 billion. Non-durable goods industries, accounting for 70% of Manufacturing Shipments, increased 2.1% ($42.7 million) to $2.1 billion. Durable goods industries, accounting for 30% of Manufacturing Shipments, increased 3.1% ($27.3 million) to $.9 billion.

 

CANADA

In Canada April 2019, seasonally adjusted Manufacturing Shipments decreased 0.6% to $57.8 billion over March 2019 and increased 3.1% over April 2018.

“The largest declines were in the transportation equipment and primary metal industries. Excluding transportation equipment, manufacturing sales rose 0.8%.”

Compared to March 2019, overall sales decreased in 8 of 21 industries representing 36.1% of all manufacturing sectors.

Durable goods decreased 3.5% to $29.8 billion over Mar 2019 and decreased 0.3% over April 2018. Non-durable goods increased 2.6% to $28.0 billion over Mar 2019 and increased 7.1% over April 2018.

 

 

Inventory to sales ratio increased to 1.53 in April. Unfilled orders declined 0.3% to $99.8 billion. Unfilled orders were down in the machinery industry and the other transportation equipment industry.

 

PROVINCES

On a seasonally adjusted, month-over-month basis, Manufacturing sales increased in 5 provinces in April 2019 over March 2019. Prince Edward Island had the largest growth at 10.9%. New Brunswick shipment growth decreased 3.6%. Nova Scotia shipments decreased 0.8%. In Canada shipments decreased 0.6%.

 

On a seasonally adjusted year-over-year basis, Manufacturing sales increased in 5 provinces in April 2019 over April 2018. Prince Edward Island had the largest growth at 29.5%.  Newfoundland and Labrador shipment growth decreased 14.4%. Nova Scotia shipments decreased 2.8%. In Canada shipments increased 3.1%.

On a seasonally adjusted, year-to-date basis, Manufacturing sales increased in 9 provinces in Jan-Apr 2019. Prince Edward Island had the largest growth at 12.5%. New Brunswick shipment growth decreased 12.2%. Nova Scotia shipments increased 2.4%. In Canada shipments increased 2.3%.

 

 NOVA SCOTIA SECTORS

Nova Scotia manufacturing shipments have been on an upward trend since the beginning of 2014 with rising   durable (i.e. wood products, metal products, machinery, transportation equipment) and rising   non-durable (i.e. food, paper/pulp, chemical, plastic and rubber) shipments. Seasonally adjusted non-durable shipments have risen from $405.4 million in January 2014 to $531.2 million in April 2019. Durable shipments have increased from $170.1 million in January 2014 to $211.4 million in April 2019.

Unadjusted year-to-date (Jan-Apr 2019), Manufacturing Shipments increased 2.8% ($74.6 million) over the same period last year.

  • Non-durable goods shipments, accounting for 69% of Manufacturing Shipments, increased 2.5% ($47.1 million),
  • Food manufacturing with a 26% share decreased 3.0% (-$22.9 million).
  • Paper manufacturing, accounting for 9% of Manufacturing Shipments, increased 10.4% ($22.9 million).
  • Plastics & rubber products with a 25% share increased 5.8% ($38.9 million).
  • Other non-durables with a 9% share increased 3.6% ($8.2 million).
  • Durable goods industries with a 31% share increased 3.3% ($27.5 million).
  • Wood product manufacturing with a 5% share decreased 13.6% ($20.1 million).
  • Machinery manufacturing with a 4% share increased 8.5% ($8.1 million).
  • Other durables with a 23% share increased 6.7% ($39.6 million).
