In the European Union, on a month-over-month basis, Retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were up 0.3 per cent in March 2019 over February 2019. In the Euro Area, Retail sales were up -0.1 per cent in March 2019.
In the European Union, on a year-to-date basis, Retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were up 3.7 per cent in Jan-Mar 2019 vs Jan-Mar 2018. In the Euro Area, Retail sales were up 2.8 per cent in Jan-Mar 2019 vs Jan-Mar 2018.

In the European Union Jan-Mar 2019 vs Jan-Mar 2018, where data is available, the strongest growth in year-to-date retail sales occurred in Romania (12.3%); Hungary (9.5%); Slovenia (8.6%); Croatia (8.6%); Luxembourg (8.5%), and the weakest growth occurred in Belgium (0.6%); Finland (1.3%) ; Austria (1.5%) ; and Denmark (1.8%).
By retail sector
In the Euro area, by retail sector, the strongest growth in Jan-Mar 2019 vs Jan-Mar 2018 is found in Mail & internet sales (8.1%) followed by Computers, telecommunications (4.2%), and Automotive fuel (3.9%); Pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetic (2.7%); Hardware, appliances (2.7%); Food, beverage, tobacco (2.1%). The lowest growth was in Clothing, footwear (1.1%).
In the European Union, by retail sector, the strongest growth in Jan-Mar 2019 vs Jan-Mar 2018 is found in Mail & internet sales (11.1%) followed by Automotive fuel (5.6%), and Pharmaceutical, medical, Cosmetic (5.4%); Computers, telecommunications (4.0%); Hardware, appliances (3.2%); Food, beverage, tobacco (2.7%). The lowest growth was in Clothing, footwear (2.2%).
