EU AND EURO AREA UNEMPLOYMENT RATE, MARCH 2019

Eurostat has reported that the unemployment rate in the Euro Area fell to 7.7 per cent in March, down 0.1 per cent from last month and from 8.5 per cent in March 2018.  For the Euro Area, this is the lowest unemployment rate since September 2008. For the broader European Union, the unemployment fell to 6.4 per cent this month, down from 6.5 per cent in February and 7.0 per cent a year ago.  The unemployment rate in the European Union is at its lowest level since the monthly data series began in 2000. 

Among major European economies, the unemployment rate was highest in Greece (18.5 per cent in January), Spain (14.0 per cent), and Italy (10.2 per cent). Unemployment rates were lowest in Czechia (Czech Republic, 1.9 per cent), and Germany (3.2 per cent).
