WHOLESALE TRADE, JANUARY 2019

MONTH-OVER-MONTH

The month-over-month index of wholesale trade illustrates the volatility of Nova Scotia seasonally adjusted wholesale trade in comparison to the national index. Year-to-date comparisons are more indicative of economic conditions for such volatile indicators.

Note: No year-to-date graphic or analysis this month as Year-over-year is the same as Year-to-date.

In Nova Scotia January 2019, on a seasonally adjusted basis

  • month-over-month Wholesale Trade increased 0.5 per cent to $869.8 million over December 2018.
  • year-over-year Wholesale Trade increased 5.5 per cent over January 2018.

 In Canada January 2019, on a seasonally adjusted basis

  • month-over-month Wholesale Trade increased 0.6 per cent to $63.5 billion over December 2018.
  • year-over-year Wholesale Trade increased 1.8 per cent over January 2018.

 

BY PROVINCE

On a month over month basis, seasonally adjusted Wholesale Trade was up 0.6 per cent nationally. Seven provinces reported monthly increases in wholesale trade, with New Brunswick (7.7 per cent) reporting the largest gain in percentage terms. Nova Scotia reported an increase (0.5 per cent) over the previous month. Saskatchewan reported the largest decline (-10.7 per cent) over the previous month.

On a year-over-year basis, seasonally adjusted Wholesale Trade was up 1.8 per cent nationally. Eight provinces reported year-over-year increases in wholesale trade, with Prince Edward Island (13.5 per cent) reporting the largest gain in percentage terms. Nova Scotia reported an increase (5.5 per cent) over the previous year. Compared to January 2018 British Columbia reported the largest decline (-0.6 per cent).

 

 

NOVA SCOTIA SECTORS

Statistics Canada now releases seasonally adjusted wholesale trade data by sector at the provincial level. As there has been significant volatility in recent wholesale values for Nova Scotia,  Year-to-date comparisons are more indicative of economic conditions for volatile indicators and seasonally adjusted wholesale values will also smooth out the indicator.

Note: No year-to-date graphic or analysis this month as Year-over-year is the same as Year-to-date.

In Nova Scotia (Jan 2019 vs Jan 2018), Total wholesale trade year-over-year increased 5.5 per cent ($45.6 million) over the same period last year.

  • Food, beverage with a 33% share of Wholesale Trade increased 7.0 per cent ($18.5 million).
  • Motor vehicle and parts with a 16% share increased 2.8 per cent ($3.8 million).
  • Building material with a 20% share increased 3.2 per cent ($5.4 million).
  • Machinery, equipment with a 19% share increased 18.8 per cent ($26.2 million).
  • Miscellaneous wholesalers with a 7% share increased 2.6 per cent ($1.6 million).
  • Other wholesalers with a 5% share decreased 17.6 per cent (-$9.9 million).
