March 12, 2019UK TRADE BALANCE, JANUARY 2019 UK import and export trade are a main contributor to the overall economic growth of the UK.
Month-over-month
In January 2019, the UK seasonally adjusted goods & services trade deficit widened by £0.4 billion to £3.8 billion. Exports of goods and services increased 2.3 per cent (£1.2 billion) to £54.7 billion while Imports of goods and services increased 2.8 per cent (£1.6 billion) to £58.5 billion.
In January 2019, Exports of goods increased 4.1 per cent (£1.180 billion) to £29.9 billion while Imports of goods increased 3.8 per cent (£1.578 billion) to £43.0 billion. The resulting goods deficit widened by 3.1 per cent (£0.398 billion) to £13.1 billion.
In January 2019, Exports of services increased 0.1 per cent (£0.023 billion) to £24.7 billion while Imports of services were virtually unchanged (+£0.002 billion) at £15.5 billion. The resulting services surplus widened by 0.2 per cent (£0.021 billion) to £9.3 billion.
Year-to-date Goods Export Trade by Sector
In Jan 2019,
- Machinery & transport equip sector, accounting for 40% of goods exports, increased 2.5 per cent (£296 million) to £12.1 billion.
- Chemicals sector, accounting for 17% of goods exports, decreased 3.1 per cent (£159 million) to £5.0 billion.
- Misc finished manufactures sector, accounting for 14% of goods exports, increased 5.9 per cent (£235 million) to £4.2 billion.
- Fuels sector, accounting for 10% of goods exports, increased 5.7 per cent (£164 million) to £3.0 billion.
- Material manufactures sector, accounting for 9% of goods exports, decreased 2.7 per cent (£75 million) to £2.7 billion.
- Food sector, accounting for 5% of goods exports, increased 9.9 per cent (£124 million) to £1.4 billion.
- Beverages & tobacco sector, accounting for 2% of goods exports, increased 13.9 per cent (£91 million) to £0.7 billion.
- Crude Materials sector, accounting for 2% of goods exports, increased 7.9 per cent (£48 million) to £0.7 billion.
- Unspecified goods sector, accounting for 0.3% of goods exports, decreased 58.1 per cent (£122 million) to £88 million.
- Animal/vegetable/oils & fats sector, accounting for 0.2% of goods exports, increased 16.7 per cent (£7 million) to £49 million.
Trade with EU(28) and non-EU(28) countries
In January 2019, goods exports with non-European Union countries increased 3.9 per cent (£0.551 billion) to £14.8 billion, while goods imports from non-EU28 countries increased 6.2 per cent (£1.159 billion) to £19.8 billion. The resulting goods deficit widened by 13.9 per cent (£0.608 billion) to £5.0 billion.
In January 2019, goods exports to the European Union (EU28) increased 4.3 per cent (£0.629 billion) to £15.1 billion, while goods imports from the European Union increased 1.8 per cent (£0.419 billion) to £23.2 billion. The resulting goods deficit narrowed by 2.5 per cent (£0.210 billion) to £8.1 billion.
