In the European Union, on a month-over-month basis, Retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were up 1.1 per cent in January 2019 over December 2018. In the Euro Area, Retail sales were up 1.2 per cent in January 2019.
In the European Union, on a year-to-date basis, Retail sales (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) were up 3.2 per cent in Jan 2019 vs Jan 2018. In the Euro Area, Retail sales were up 2.6 per cent in Jan 2019 vs Jan 2018.

In the European Union Jan 2019 vs Jan 2018, where data is available, the strongest growth in year-to-date retail sales occurred in Slovenia (10.1%); Romania (8.7%); Hungary (7.4%); Estonia (7.2%); Poland (6.1%), and the weakest growth occurred in Finland (0.1%); Denmark (1.0%); Belgium (1.3%); and Austria (1.9%).
By retail sector
In the European Union, by retail sector, the strongest growth in Jan 2019 vs Jan 2018 is found in Mail & internet sales (9.9%) followed by Pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetic (5.6%), and Automotive fuel (4.0%); Food, beverage, tobacco (3.5%); Computers, telecommunications (1.7%); Hardware, appliances (1.5%). The lowest growth was in Clothing, footwear (0.8%).
In the Euro area, by retail sector, the strongest growth in Jan 2019 vs Jan 2018 is found in Mail & internet sales (7.9%) followed by Automotive fuel (3.3%), and Food, beverage, tobacco (3.1%); Pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetic (1.8%); Hardware, appliances (0.9%); The data was not available for Clothing, footwear; and Computers, telecommunications.
