February 14, 2019US RETAIL SALES, DECEMBER AND ANNUAL 2018 The US Census Bureau announced today the advance estimates of US retail and food service sales for December 2018. There was a seasonally adjusted 1.2 per cent decrease ($6.4 billion) over November 2018 to $505.8 billion, and a 2.3 per cent increase over December 2017.
Excluding food services and drinking places, retail trade sales decreased 1.3 per cent over November 2018, and increased 2.1 per cent over December 2017. Food service and drinking place receipts decreased 0.7 per cent to $59.8 billion.
Annual 2018
US Retail & Food Services sales increased 4.9 per cent over 2017. Retail trade increased 4.8 per cent and food services and drinking places sales increased 5.8 per cent .
Sales were up in all categories except for sporting and recreation stores. The fastest gains were in gas stations (including the effects of rising oil prices) as well as non-store retailers.
