NOVA SCOTIA - INTERNATIONAL MERCHANDISE TRADE NOVEMBER 2018

Year-to-Date (Jan-Nov 2018 vs. Jan-Nov 2017, customs-based, unadjusted)

In Jan-Nov 2018, Nova Scotia International Merchandise Trade Exports increased 7.5% ($366.9 million) over Jan-Nov 2017, to $5.2 billion.

YTD - By Sector

Comparing Nova Scotia's exports for Jan-Nov 2018 with the same period last year, the largest dollar value increases were in Forestry/Building/Packaging Materials ($147.5 million), Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food ($46.2 million), and Chemical, plastic, rubber ($40.5 million).

Metal/Ores increased 40.4% but now makes up a relatively small portion of Nova Scotia's exports.

 

On a year-to-date basis, export values increased in

  • Energy by 163.4% ($29.5 million)
  • Metal/Ores by 40.4% ($18.3 million)
  • Forestry/Building/Packaging Materials by 23.4% ($147.5 million)
  • Chemical, plastic, rubber by 15.8% ($40.5 million)
  • Metal/Mineral Products by 14.3% ($26.2 million)
  • Electronics by 6.7% ($9.3 million)
  • Machinery/Equipment by 6.2% ($7.0 million)
  • Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food by 5.0% ($46.2 million)

 

In Jan-Nov 2018

  • Consumer Goods led the way with a value of $1,319.3 million (25 % share), followed by
  • Motor vehicles/Parts with a value of $1,174.8 million (22 % share),
  • Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food with a value of $973.6 million (19 % share),
  • Forestry/Building/Packaging Materials with a value of $777.6 million (15 % share),
  • Chemical, plastic, rubber with a value of $296.5 million (6 % share),
  • Metal/Mineral Products with a value of $210,162.0 million (4 % share),
  • Electronics with a value of $148.4 million (3 % share),
  • Machinery/Equipment with a value of $120.2 million (2 % share),
  • Metal/Ores with a value of $63.7 million (1 % share),
  • Special Transactions with a value of $50.2 million (1 % share),
  • Transportation Equipment with a value of $48.9 million (1 % share), and,
  • Energy with a value of $47.5 million (1 % share).

 

 YTD by Province

In Jan-Nov 2018, Newfoundland and Labrador reported the highest increase (30.0%) in merchandise trade exports over Jan-Nov 2017. Nova Scotia reported a 7.5% gain in merchandise trade exports.  Canada reported a 7.8% gain in merchandise trade exports over Jan-Nov 2017.

Excluding energy exports, Manitoba reported the fastest growth at 12.8%, followed by Alberta at 12.1% and British Columbia at 10.1%. Nova Scotia reported a 7.2% gain in non-energy merchandise trade exports.  Canada reported a 4.9% increase in Non-energy exports.

Excluding energy exports, Alberta reported the highest increase (11.9%) in Non-energy exports over Jan-Nov 2017. Nova Scotia reported a 7.0% gain in Non-energy exports. Canada reported a 4.7% gain in Non-energy exports over Jan-Nov 2017.

 

 

 YTD EXPORTS BY INTERNATIONAL DESTINATION

 

In Jan-Nov 2018 vs Jan-Nov 2017, Nova Scotia International Merchandise trade to all countries increased 7.5% to $5.2 billion.

 

In Jan-Nov 2018 vs Jan-Nov 2017, Nova Scotia International Merchandise trade to the Unbited States  increased 4.0% to $3.3 billion. Share of total merchandise trade exports was 63%.

In Jan-Nov 2018 vs Jan-Nov 2017, Nova Scotia International Merchandise trade to China increased 30.7% to $726 million. Share of total merchandise trade exports was 14%.

 

The aggregate year-to-date exports to other Major Asian countries (Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, India, Taiwan, Indonesia and Singapore) declined 13.1% over Jan-Nov 2017 to 352.5 million. Share of total merchandise trade exports was 7%.

 

  The aggregate year-to-date exports to other Major selected European countries (United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, France, Netherlands, Belgium and Spain) increased 20.3% over Jan-Nov 2017 to $378.3 million. Share of total merchandise trade exports was 7%.

 

 The aggregate year-to-date exports to all other countries increased 14.4% over Jan-Nov 2017 to $476.3 million. Share of total merchandise trade exports was 9%.
