MANUFACTURING SHIPMENTS, OCTOBER 2018

Nova Scotia

In Nova Scotia October 2018, seasonally adjusted manufacturing shipments increased 4.8 per cent to $764.5 million over September 2018, and increased 4.2 per cent over October 2017. Manufacturing shipments are up 11.0 per cent in the first ten months of the year. Year-to-date manufacturing shipments (unadjusted) of non-durable goods are up 15.1 per cent while shipments for durables are up 1.0 per cent.

CANADA

In Canada October 2018, seasonally adjusted manufacturing shipments decreased 0.1 per cent to $58.2 billion over September 2018, and increased 8.0 per cent over October 2017. Compared to September 2018, overall sales decreased in 7 of 21 industries representing 40.5 per cent of all manufacturing sectors.  Durable goods decreased 0.9 per cent to $30.0 billion over Sep 2018, and increased 4.9 per cent over October 2017. Non-durable goods increased 0.7 per cent to $28.3 billion over Sep 2018, and increased 11.5 per cent over October 2017. 

Inventory to sales ratio was increased to 1.46 in October.  Unfilled orders increased 1.4 per cent to $96.4 billion mostly due to an increase in the transportation equipment industry.  New orders increased 2.4 per cent to $59.6 billion in October.

PROVINCES

On a seasonally adjusted, month-over-month basis, manufacturing sales increased in 7 provinces in October 2018 over September 2018. Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island had the fastest growth (+5.4 per cent), while New Brunswick shipment growth showed the largest decline (-12.0 per cent). Nova Scotia shipments increased 4.8 per cent. Nationally, manufacturing shipments decreased 0.1 per cent.

On a seasonally adjusted year-over-year basis, manufacturing sales increased in 9 provinces in October 2018 over October 2017. Prince Edward Island had the largest gain (+38.8 per cent) while New Brunswick reported the largest decline (-26.4 per cent). Nova Scotia shipments increased 4.2 per cent. In Canada shipments increased 8.0 per cent.

On a seasonally adjusted, year-to-date basis, manufacturing sales increased in all provinces in Jan-Oct 2018. Newfoundland and Labrador had the fastest growth (+19.5 per cent) and Ontario had the slowest (+4.0 per cent). Nova Scotia shipments increased 11.0 per cent.  In Canada shipments increased 6.2 per cent.

YEAR-TO-DATE UNADJUSTED DATA

On an unadjusted year-to-date basis, manufacturing shipments growth was positive in all provinces. Nationally, shipments increased by 6.3 per cent. Nova Scotia shipments increased 10.5 per cent.
