US RETAIL SALES, OCTOBER 2018

The US Census Bureau announced today that the advance estimates of U.S retail and food service sales for October 2018, was a seasonally adjusted 0.8 per cent increase ($3.9 billion) over September 2018 to $511.5 billion, and a 4.6 per cent increase over October 2017.

Excluding food services and drinking places, retail trade sales increased 0.9 per cent over September 2018, and increased 4.3 per cent over October 2017. Food service and drinking place receipts decreased 0.2 per cent to $60.4 billion,

 

Year-to-date

In Jan-Oct 2018, United States seasonally adjusted Retail Trade & Food Services increased 5.3 per cent over Jan-Oct 2017.

  • Retail trade increased 5.2 per cent,
  • Food services and drinking places sales increased 6.0 per cent.
  • Sales were up in all categories except for sporting and recreation stores. 
  • The fastest gains were in gas stations (including the effects of rising oil prices) as well as non-store retailers.
