RETAIL TRADE, AUGUST 2018

In Nova Scotia August 2018, seasonally adjusted Retail Trade increased 0.5% over July 2018 to $1.4 billion, and in Aug 2018 vs Aug 2017, seasonally adjusted Retail Trade increased 1.4%.

Nationally, August 2018, seasonally adjusted Retail Trade decreased 0.1% over July 2018 to $50.8 billion, and, in Aug 2018 vs Aug 2017, seasonally adjusted Retail Trade increased 3.6%.

 

Canada and the Provinces

On a month over month basis, seasonally adjusted Retail Trade decreased 0.1% nationally. Six provinces reported monthly increases in retail trade, with Prince Edward Island (1.1 %) reporting the largest gain. Nova Scotia reported an increase (0.5 %) over the previous month. Saskatchewan reported the largest decline (2.7 %).

 

On a year over year basis, seasonally adjusted Retail Trade increased 3.6% nationally. Nine provinces reported year-over-year increases in retail trade, with Prince Edward Island (5.1 %) reporting the largest gain. Nova Scotia reported an increase (1.4 %) over the same month last year. Newfoundland and Labrador reported a decline (0.1 %).

On a year to date basis, seasonally adjusted Retail Trade increased 3.3% nationally. Nine provinces reported year-over-year increases in retail trade, with Prince Edward Island (4.6 %) reporting the largest gain. Nova Scotia reported an increase (2.9 %) over the same period last year. Newfoundland and Labrador reported a decline (1.2 %).

 

Nova Scotia Sectors 

Unadjusted year-to-date (Jan-Aug 2018), Retail Trade increased 3.0% ($307.2 million) over Jan-Aug 2017 to $10.6 billion.

  • Motor Vehicle with a 28% share of Retail Trade decreased 6.0% ($187.7 million).
  • Furniture with a 2% share increased 29.9% ($59.4 million).
  • Electronics with a 1% share increased 9.6% ($10.8 million).
  • Building Material with a 7% share increased 8.8% ($62.3 million).
  • Food & Beverage with a 21% share increased 3.4% ($74.4 million).
  • Health with an 8% share increased 1.6% ($13.1 million).
  • Gas Stations with a 14% share increased 14.2% ($185.9 million).
  • Clothing with a 3% share increased 4.1% ($13.9 million).
  • Sporting & Hobbies with a 1% share decreased 2.1% ($3.3 million).
  • General Merchandise with a 11% share decreased 0.2% ($2.8 million).
  • Misc. Stores with a 3% share increased 43.8% ($81.2 million).

 

 

E-Commerce

In Canada August 2018, on a month-over-month basis, unadjusted retail e-commerce sales totalled $1.4 billion, representing a 2.6% share of total retail trade.  E-commerce sales increased 7.5% over August 2018 and increased 13.9% over August 2017.

On a year-to-date basis (Jan-Aug 2018), unadjusted retail e-commerce sales increased 14.3% over Jan-Aug 2017 to $10.7 billion, representing a 2.7% share of total retail trade.
