US CONSTRUCTION SPENDING, AUGUST 2018

In August, US construction spending increased 0.1 per cent to 1,318 billion. This follows a revised increase of 0.2 per cent reported in July, when construction spending totaled $1,317 billion. Year-over-year, spending is 6.5 per cent above August 2017.

Private sector construction decreased by 0.5 per cent in August to $1,002 billion, and is up 4.4 per cent over August of last year. Public sector construction rose 2.0 per cent to $316.7 billion in August, and is up 14.0 per cent year-over-year. 

US residential construction declined 0.7 per cent month-to-month to $556 billion, and is up 4.1 per cent over August 2017. Non-residential construction spending increased 0.7 per cent to $763 billion in August, and increased 8.4 per cent year-over-year. 

In the first eight months of 2018, US construction spending (unadjusted) is up 5.3 per cent over the same period in 2017. Residential construction grew by 6.4 per cent, while non-residential grew by 4.4 per cent. Private sector construction increased by 4.8 per cent and public sector construction increased 7.0 per cent, compared to the first eight months of 2017.
