EU AND EURO AREA RETAIL TRADE, JULY 2018

Retail sales in the European Union were down 0.1 per cent in July (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) compared with June.  For the Euro Area, retail sales were down 0.3 per cent. 

On a year-to-date basis comparing retail sales in January-July 2018 with the same months of 2017, EU retail sales values (seasonally and calendar adjusted - not deflated) are up 3.6 per cent.  Euro Area retail sales are up 2.8 per cent year-to-date.

By member state, the strongest year-to-date retail sales growth is reported among Eastern European countries such as Romania, Hungary, Latvia, Poland, Slovakia, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic.  Retail sales have grown more slowly in Italy, Greece, Belgium and Denmark.

By retail sector, the strongest growth (Jan-Jul18 vs Jan-Jul17) is found in mail order and internet sales, followed by automotive fuels, pharmaceutical/medical/cosmetics and food/beverage/tobacco retailers.  Clothing/footwear retailers reported no growth.
