MANUFACTURING SHIPMENTS, MAY 2018

Nova Scotia

In Nova Scotia May 2018 seasonally adjusted Manufacturing Shipments decreased 0.4% to $805 million over April 2018 and increased 14.4% over May 2017.

Unadjusted year-to-date (Jan-May 2018) manufacturing shipments have increased 18.3% (+$570.7 million) over the same period last year.

  • Non-durable goods shipments, accounting for 70% of manufacturing shipments, increased 25.9% (+$533.5 million),
  • Food with a 30% share increased 23.7% (+$211.3 million)
  • Plastic and rubber products with a 23% share increased 31.9% (+$203.0 million)
  •  Durable manufacturing, accounting for 30% of Manufacturing Shipments, increased 3.5% (+$37.2 million)
  • Wood products with a 5% share increased 3.8% (+$7.2 million)
  • Fabricated metal with a 3% share decreased 0.6% (-$0.7 million)
  • Machinery with a 2% share increased 8.5% (+$5.6 million)
  • Computer& electronic with a 2% share decreased 1.5% (-$1 million)
  • Transportation equipment with a 13% share increased 1.5% (+$7.2 million)

 

 

CANADA

Canada seasonally adjusted manufacturing sales increased 1.4% to $57.1 billion in May 2018, and increased 3.7% over the same month last year. Compared to April 2018, overall sales increased in 14 of 21 industries representing 64% of the manufacturing sectors. Chemical, machinery and wood product industries accounted for most of the gains. Transportation equipment industies reported the largest declines.

Sales were up 6.2% iin the chemical industry to $4.7 billion, machinery increased 8.9% to $3.3 billion. Transportation declined 1.9% to $10.6 billion and petrolem and coal declined 1.8% to $5.2 billion.

Inventory levels increased 0.4% growth in May 2018 to $81.5 billion - a record high.  The inventory to sales ratio decreased from 1.44 to 1.43. Unfilled orders increased for the fourth consecutive month with an increase of 3.5% to $92.8 billion mostly due to aerospace product and parts industry. New orders increased 4.9% to $60.2 bllion over April 2018.

 

PROVINCES

Manufacturing sales were up in seven proincess in May 2018.  Alberta had the largest month-over-month seasonally adjusted growth at 7.9% while the sharpest decline was in Newfoundland and Labrador at -29.7 per cent. Nova Scotia reported a decline of 0.4 per cent.

On a seasonally adjusted year-over-year basis, manufacturing shipments are up 3.7% in Canada, with nine provinces recording positive year-over-year growth. Nova Scotia reported a 14.4% year-over-year increase. Manufacturing shipments were lower in Newfoundland Labrador -28.3% over May 2017.

 

On a seasonally adjusted, year-to-date basis, manufacturing shipments growth was positive in all provinces.  Canada reported +3.9% growth compared with the first five months of 2017.  The largest gains were reported in Nova Scotia (+18.3%), followed by Saskatchewan (+10.6%).

 

 

 

YEAR-TO-DATE UNADJUST DATA

On an unadjusted year-to-date basis, manufacturing shipments growth was positive in all provinces.  Canada reported +4.2% growth and Nova Scotia was up 18.3 per cent.
