US CONSTRUCTION SPENDING, MAY 2018

In May, US construction spending increased 0.4 per cent to $1,309 billion. This follows a revised gain of 0.9 per cent reported in April, when construction spending totaled $1,304 billion. Year-over-year, spending is 4.5 per cent above May 2017.

Private sector construction rose by 0.3 per cent in May to $1,005 billion, and is up 4.4 per cent over May of last year. Public sector construction increased 0.7 per cent to $304 billion in May, and is up 4.7 per cent year-over-year. 

US residential construction increased 0.8 per cent month-to-month to $560 billion, and is up 6.4 per cent over May 2017. Non-residential construction spending edged up 0.1 per cent to $749 billion in May, and increased 3.0 per cent year-over-year. 

In the first five months of 2018, US construction spending is up 4.2 per cent over the same period in 2017. Residential construction grew by 6.5 per cent, while non-residential grew by 2.6 per cent. Private sector construction increased by 4.2 per cent and public sector construction increased 4.3 per cent, compared to the first five months of 2017.
