LABOUR FORCE SURVEY - MAY 2018

In Nova Scotia May 2018, (seasonally-adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour Force decreased 0.2% (-1,000) from April 2018 to 489,500 and increased 0.1% (500) over May 2017.
  • Employment decreased 0.8% (-3,600) from April 2018 to 454,100 and increased 1.0% (4,500) over May 2017.
  • Unemployment increased 7.9% (2,600) from April 2018 to 35,400 and decreased 10.2% (-4,000) over May 2017.
  • Unemployment rate increased 0.5 percentage points from April 2018 to 7.2%.

 In Canada May 2018, (seasonally-adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour Force decreased 0.1% (-10,900) from April 2018 to 19,747,800 and increased 0.5% (104,100) over May 2017.
  • Employment remains virtually unchanged 0.0% (-7,500) from April 2018 at 18,596,200 and increased 1.3% (238,200) over May 2017.
  • Unemployment decreased 0.3% (-3,400) from April 2018 to 1,151,600 and decreased 10.4% (-134,100) over May 2017.
  • Unemployment rate remains virtually unchanged from April 2018 at 5.8%.

 In Halifax May 2018, (3 month moving average, seasonally-adjusted):

  • Labour Force decreased 0.3% (-700) from April 2018 to 248,300 and increased 2.6% (6,300) over May 2017.
  • Employment decreased 0.3% (-800) from April 2018 to 234,200 and increased 3.9% (8,800) over May 2017.
  • Unemployment increased 0.7% (100) from April 2018 to 14,100 and decreased 15.6% (-2,600) over May 2017.
  • Unemployment rate increased 0.1 percentage points from April 2018 to 5.7%.

Statistics Canada Quotes

"Employment ...decreased in British Columbia and Nova Scotia."

"The number of workers in Nova Scotia was down by 3,600 in May, and the unemployment rate increased by 0.5 percentage points to 7.2%. On a year-over-year basis, employment was little changed."
