US TRADE BALANCE, APRIL 2018

 

In April 2018, the US goods and services trade deficit narrowed to -$46.2 billion, a $1.0 billion improvement compared with revised March deficit of -$47.2 billion.  The deficit in goods trade was improved by $1.0 billion to -$68.3 billion.  The services surplus declined by $12 million to $22.1 billion.

 

On a year-to-date basis, the US trade deficit was $201.8 billion for the first four months of 2018, with a goods deficit of $288.8 billion and a services surplus of $87.0 billion. Compared with last year's year to date figures, the goods deficit widened $23.1 billion and the services surplus grew by $2.4 billion. On balance, the total trade in goods and services for year to date 2018 was down $20.8 billion.

Monthly exports increased by $585 millon, including a rise of $295 million in goods exports and $291 million in services exports. US imports were down $426 million in April, mainly on a $727 million decline in goods imports.  Service imports grew by $301 million.
