TRADE BY EXPORT CHARACTERISTICS 2010-2017

 

 

Statistics Canada has created a new database that provides information on merchndise trade by Exporter characteristics.

In the period 2010 to 2017, Nova Scotia exported between $3.9 billion and $5.0 billion worth of goods to the global market. In this period, the number of exporting establishments ranged from 921 to 980 exporters.  The average value of exports per exporting establishment ranged from $4.2 million to $5.3 million per exporter.

In Nova Scotia 2017, the average value of exports per exporting establishment was $5.0 million. The value of exports decreased  1.0% to $4.9 billion, and the number of exporters increased 1.8% to 970 over 2016.

 

Canada and the Provinces

In Canada 2017, the average value of exports per exporting establishment was $10 million. Newfoundland and Labrador recorded the highest average export value per exporting establishment at $20.6 million.

In Canada 2017, the number of  exporting establishment increased by 74 establishments to 48,454. Ontario has the largest number of exporting establishments at 20,715.

 

 

 

Nova Scotia

 In 2017, in twenty industrial sectors Nova Scotia's 970  exporting establishments exported a total of $5 billion worth of goods into the international market.  The sector with the largest share of total exports ($3.2 billion or 66.7% share), the highest average exports per exporting establishment ($11.1 million) and the largest number of exporting establishments (293) was the manufacturing industry. In 2017, the value of manufacturing sector exports declined 4.6%, and the number of exporting establishments declined 1.0% over 2016.

 

 

The Wholesale industry is the second largest industry in terms of exporting value ($0.938 billion, or 19.3% share of total exports). Mining, Oil and Gas is number two with respect to the average export value per exporter at $8.2 million per exporting establishment.

 

Nova Scotia Manufacturing

 

 

By its dominance of the exporting sector, Manufacturing industry justifies a closer look at its subsectors.

With a 47.2% share of total manufacturing exports in 2017, the Plastics and Rubber industry is the largest subsector. In 2017, Plastics and rubber expports declined 1.3% over 2016 to $15 billion, and the number of exporting establishments increased 4.0% to 26, over 2016. The average value of exports per exporting establishments was highest at $59 million.

 

 

 

 

 Definition: "An enterprise is defined as the statistical unit that directs and controls the allocation of resources relating to its domestic operations, and for which consolidated financial statements are maintained. An establishment is defined as the statistical unit where the accounting data required to measure production is available. The two measures generate a different number of exporting units as well as a different industry allocation of these units." and, "The number of exporting enterprises corresponds to the number of exporting enterprises identified in the Business Register by the TEC – Goods program."
