UK RETAIL SALES, APRIL 2018

The UK Office for National Statistics reports that UK retail sales increased in April.  Both the value and volume of retail sales were up 1.6 per cent over the previous month.  The monthly retail sales bulletin attributes this month's growth to sales recovering from the effects of poor weather in March.  Increases were seen across all sectors except department stores, which had relatively strong sales online in March due to the weather.

Year-over-year UK retail sales values were 3.5 per cent higher in April 2018 than they were in April 2017.  UK retail sales volumes are up 1.4 per cent in real terms year-over-year after accounting for price increases.  In the first four months of 2018, UK retail sales values are up 3.8 per cent compared with the same months of 2017 while retail sales volumes were up 1.5 per cent.
