EU AND EURO AREA GDP, Q1 2018 [FLASH]

Eurostat reports today that real GDP rose by 1.6 per cent (seasonally adjusted annualized rate) in both the euro area (EA19) and the European Union (EU28) during the first quarter of 2018, a downward revision compared to the preliminary estimate of 1.7 per cent in both regions.  Last quarter, real GDP was up 2.7 per cent in the EA19 and up 2.6 per cent in the EU28 on an annualized basis. Among members of the European Union, the fastest growth (for countries with data for Q1) was in Latvia, Hungary, Poland and Finland.

Comparing Q1 2018 with Q1 2017, seasonally adjusted GDP rose by 2.5 per cent in the euro area and 2.4 per cent in the European Union, following gains in the previous quarter of 2.8 and 2.7 per cent, respectively.
