US TRADE BALANCE, MARCH 2018

 

In March 2018, the US goods and services trade deficit narrowed to -$49.0 billion, an $8.8 billion improvement compared with revised February deficit of -$57.7 billion.  The deficit in goods trade was improved by $7.5 billion to -$69.5 billion.  The services surplus improved by $1.3 billion to $20.5 billion.

 

On a year-to-date basis, the US trade deficit was $163.4 billion for the first quarter of 2018, with a goods deficit of $223.2 billion and a services surplus of $59.8 billion.  The trade deficit for the first quarter has widened over the last two years.  

Monthly exports increased by $4.2 billion, including a rise of $3.7 billion in goods exports. US imports were down $4.6 billion in March, mainly on a $3.7 billion decline in goods imports.  Service exports were up by $0.4 billion while services imports fell by $0.9 billion.
