US CONSTRUCTION SPENDING, MARCH 2018

In March, US construction spending declined 1.7 per cent to $1,285 billion. This follows a revised gain of 1.0 per cent reported in February, when construction spending totaled $1,306 billion. Year-over-year, spending is 3.6 per cent above March 2017.

Private sector construction fell by 2.1 per cent to $987 billion, up 3.9 per cent over March 2017. Public sector construction was $297 billion in March, level with February and up 3.0 per cent year-over-year. 

US residential construction declined 3.5 per cent month-to-month to $544 billion, and is up 5.3 per cent over March 2017. Non-residential construction spending was $741 billion in March, down 0.3 per cent month-to-month and up 2.5 per cent year-over-year. 

For the first quarter of 2018, US construction spending is up 5.0 per cent over the same period in 2017. Residential construction grew by 8.2 per cent, while non-residential grew by 2.8 per cent. Private sector construction grew 5.2 per cent in the first three months of the year, and public sector construction grew by 4.6 per cent.
