April 19, 2018NON-RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION INVESTMENT Q1 2018 Nova Scotia's non-residential building construction investment (seasonally adjusted) was $168.3 million in the first quarter of 2018. This was 6.8 per cent higher than the previous quarter owing to an increase, in the largest component, commercial (+14.8%) and declines in industrial (-3.0%) and institutional and governmental (-10.9%).
Compared to the same quarter last year (Q1 2017), non-residential building construction increased 18.3 per cent. Activity was higher in all three subsectors with increases in industrial (+4.2%), commercial (+21.2%), and institutional and government (+22.3%).
Halifax non-residential building construction was up 7.4 per cent compared to the previous quarter due to growth in commercial offsetting lower industrial and institutional and governmental building construction. Outside of Halifax, non-residential building construction increased 5.8 per cent in the quarter mostly due to the increase in commercial buildings.
In Q1 2018 compared to Q1 2017, non-residential building construction is up 18.3 per cent or $26.0 million in Nova Scotia. The increase in accounted for with gains in commercial (+$20.0 million), institutional and government (+$4.9 million) and industrial (+$1.1 million) across the sectors and by a increase in Halifax (+$33.8 million) and decline outside of Halifax (-$7.9 million).
In Canada, non-residential building construction increased in the first quarter of 2018 (+3.1%), the fourth consecutive quarterly gain. Growth was up in all three components and in nine provinces. Ontario reported the largest dollar increase followed by British Columbia and Quebec.
Compared to the fourth quarter of 2017, Canadian non-residential building construction was up 9.0 per cent. Six provinces have higher non-residential construction activity compared to Q1 2017 while lower activity was reported in Prince Edward Island and the Prairie provinces.
