EU AND EURO AREA CONSUMER PRICE INFLATION, MARCH 2018

In March, inflation rose to 1.5 per cent in the European Union (up from 1.4 per cent in February) and 1.3 per cent in the Euro Area (up from 1.1 per cent last month). Inflation in both Canada and Nova Scotia also rose in the latest year-over-year results for February.

Among member states, the fastest year-over-year inflation was reported in Romania, Estonia, the UK (Feb-18 vs Feb-17), Slovakia and Lithuania.  The lowest inflation was reported in Cyprus, Greece, and Denmark.

In March, the highest contribution to euro area inflation came from services, followed by food, alcohol & tobacco, energy and non-energy goods.  Over the last year, food and energy prices have been significant contributors to higher inflation in Europe.  Inflation for both food and energy has slowed in recent months, although inflation for food has ticked up in the March results.
