US RETAIL SALES, FEBRUARY 2018

Month-over-Month, Year-over-Year

The US Census Bureau announced today that the advance estimates of U.S retail and food service sales for February 2018 was a seasonally adjusted $492.0 billion, 0.1 per cent lower than January 2018 and 4.0 per cent higher than February 2017.

Retail trade sales declined 0.1 per cent from January, and increased 4.2 per cent over February 2017. Non-store retailers were up 10.1 per cent from the same month last year, and Gasoline Stations were up 7.9 per cent.

 

Year-to-Date

 

In Jan-Feb 2018, the United States unadjusted retail sales and food services increased 4.7 per cent ($39.6 billion) over Jan-Feb 2017 to $883 billion. Retail trade increased 5.0 per cent ($37.2 billion) over Jan-Feb 2017 to $776 billion.

  • Other Retail Operations (including food services), 30% of total retail trade increased 5.5% or $13.7 billion.
  • Motor vehicle sector, 20% of total retail trade increased 3.5% or $6.0 billion.
  • Gasoline Stations, 8% of total retail trade increased 9.6% or $6.4 billion.
  • Building materials, 6% of total retail trade increased 6.0% or $2.9 billion.
  • Food and beverage sector, 13% of total retail trade increased 3.7% or $4.1 billion.
  • General merchandise stores, 12% of total retail trade increased 2.5% or $2.5 billion.
  • Misc. retail, 2% of total retail trade increased 9.6% or $1.8 billion.
  • Furniture stores, 2% of total retail trade increased 4.9% or $0.8 billion.
  • Clothing stores, 4% of total retail trade increased 4.0% or $1.4 billion.
  • Electronics stores, 2% of total retail trade increased 4.4% or $0.6 billion.
  • Sports and hobby stores, 1% of total retail trade decreased 5.0% or $0.6 billion.
