US RETAIL SALES, JANUARY 2018

Month-over-Month, Year-over-Year

The US Census Bureau announced today that the advance estimates of U.S retail and food service sales for January 2018 was a seasonally adjusted $492.0 billion, 0.3 per cent lower than December 2017 and 3.6 per cent higher than January 2017.

Retail trade sales decreased 0.3 per cent from December 2017 and increased 3.9 per cent year over last year. Gasoline Stations were up 1.6% over last month and up 9.0 % from January 2017, while Non-retail stores  were up  unchanged over December 2017 and up 10.2% from last year.

 

Year-to-Date

 

In Jan 2018, the United States unadjusted retail sales and food services increased 5.1% ($21.5 billion) over Jan 2017 to $445 billion. Retail trade increased 5.6% ($20.6 billion) over Jan 2017 to $391.3 billion.

  • Other Retail Operations (including food services), 30% of total retail trade increased 6.1% or $7.7 billion.
  • Motor vehicle sector, 20% of total retail trade increased 4.2% or $3.5 billion.
  • Gasoline Stations, 8% of total retail trade increased 10.1% or $3.5 billion.
  • Building materials, 6% of total retail trade increased 6.0% or $1.4 billion.
  • Food and beverage sector, 13% of total retail trade increased 4.3% or $2.5 billion.
  • General merchandise stores, 11% of total retail trade increased 3.0% or $1.5 billion.
  • Misc. retail, 2% of total retail trade increased 6.4% or $0.6 billion.
  • Furniture stores, 2% of total retail trade increased 6.6% or $0.6 billion.
  • Clothing Stores, 4% of total retail trade increased 3.1% or $0.5 billion.
  • Electronics stores, 2% of total retail trade increased 2.9% or $0.2 billion.
  • Sports and hobby stores, 1% of total retail trade decreased 5.9% or $0.4 billion.
