LABOUR FORCE SURVEY - DECEMBER 2017

In Nova Scotia December 2017, (seasonally-adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):                   

  • Labour force increased 0.5% (2,300) from November 2017 to 494,500 and increased 1.1% (5,600) over December 2016.
  • Employment increased 1.3% (5,900) from November 2017 to 454,800 and increased 1.4% (6,300) over December 2016.
  • Unemployment decreased -8.3% (-3,600) from November 2017 to 39,700 and decreased -1.7% (-700) over December 2016.
  • Unemployment rate decreased -0.8 percentage points from November 2017to 8.0%.                                     

In Canada December 2017, (seasonally-adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):                            

  • Labour force increased 0.3% (52,500) from November 2017 to 19,777,900 and increased 1.1% (211,300) over December 2016.
  • Employment increased 0.4% (78,600) from November 2017 to 18,647,500 and increased 2.3% (422,500) over December 2016.
  • Unemployment decreased -2.3% (-26,100) from November 2017 to 1,130,400 and decreased -15.7% (-211,200) over December 2016.
  • Unemployment rate decreased -0.2 percentage points from November 2017to 5.7%.

In Halifax December 2017, (3 month moving average, seasonally-adjusted):  

  • Labour force remains unchanged (-100) from November 2017 at 241,200 and increased 0.3% (700) over December 2016.
  • Employment increased 0.3% (700) from November 2017 to 224,600 and decreased -0.5% (-1,200) over December 2016.
  • Unemployment decreased -4.6% (-800) from November 2017 to 16,600 and increased 12.9% (1,900) over December 2016.
  • Unemployment rate decreased -0.3 percentage points from November 2017to 6.9%.
