US CONSTRUCTION SPENDING, OCTOBER 2017

US construction spending increased by 1.4 per cent in October, well ahead of the (revised) gains of 0.3 per cent reported for September.

US construction spending reported some downturns during the spring and early summer of 2017, with an overall year-to-date gain of 4.2 per cent when comparing the first ten months of 2017 with the same period of 2016.

The gains in US construction spending have been largely in the residential sector, which is up 10.8 per cent year-to-date (although it was flat in the last two months).  US nonresidential construction spending has been down 0.1 per cent so far in 2017.  Public investment in the US is down by 3.3 per cent through the first tne months of 2017, but there was a sharp increase of 3.9 per cent in the last month.

US construction spending, particularly in residential projects is a significant driver of lumber shipments from Nova Scotia.  With strong gains in residential construction, year-to-date lumber exports from Nova Scotia to the US are up by 30.6 per cent (Jan-Sep totals).
