October 04, 2017EU RETAIL TRADE, AUGUST 2017 Retail Trade Index
In August 2017 the Euro Area (EA19) the retail trade volumes (seasonally adjusted) decreased 0.5 per cent to 105.5 over July 2017, and the retail sales index (calendar adjusted) increased 1.2 per cent to 106.3 over August 2016.
In August 2017 the European Union Area (EU28) the retail trade volumes (seasonally adjusted) remained unchanged at 109.6 over July 2017, and the retail sales index (calendar adjusted) increased 2.0 per cent to 110.0 over August 2016.

The largest month over month growth was in Greece (+2.8%, previous month), Romania (+2.3%), United Kingdom (+1.9%) and Malta (+1.5%) while the largest declines were in Cyprus (-1.4%, previous month), Portugal (-1.3%), Czech Republic (-1.0%, previous month), Austria (-1.0%) and Belgium (-0.9%).
In the EA19, Eurostat reports that sector declines occurred in automotive fuel (-0.9%), non-food products (-0.4%) and Food, drinks and tobacco (-0.3%).
In the EU28, Eurostat reports that sector declines occurred in automotive fuel (-0.5%) and Food, drinks and tobacco (-0.1%), while non-food produts increased +0.2%.
Year over Year
In the EU28, the largest year over year percent increase occurred in Romania (+15.8%), Slovania (+7.5%), Malta (+6.9%), Slovakia (6.8%) and Poland (+6.7%) while Luxembourg (-25.6%) and Belguim (-2.4%) declined.
In the EA19, Eurostat reports that year-over-year sector growth occurred in non-food products (+2.3%) and Food, drinks and tobacco (+1.1%), while automotive fuel declined 0.2%.
In the EU28, Eurostat reports that year-over-year sector growth came from non-food products (+3.3%), food, drinks and tobacco (+1.2%), and automotive fuel (+0.8%).
