RETAIL TRADE, JULY 2017

 


In Nova Scotia in July 2017 retail sales (seasonally adjusted) increased 0.7% from June 2017 to $1.3 billion and increased 9.2% over July 2016. 

In Canada in July 2017 retail sales (seasonally adjusted) increased 0.4% from June 2017 to $49.1 billion and increased 7.8% over July 2016. 

 

Sectors 

 

In Jan-Jul 2017, Nova Scotia unadjusted retail sales increased 6.3%  ($513.8 million) over Jan-Jul 2016. 

  • Motor vehicle stores:  responsible for  28% of retail sales increased $145.4 million (+6.3%),
  • Gas Stations:              13% of retail sales increased $119.0 million (+11.8%),
  • Building Materials:       7% of retail sales increased $    72.4 million (+13.4%),
  • General merchandise: 12% of retail sales increased $  64.0 million (+6.8%),
  • Health care stores:       8% of retail sales increased $  50.53 million (+7.8%),
  • Furniture stores:          2% of retail sales increased $    21.9 million (+13.0%),
  • Electronic stores:         1% of retail sales increased $   10.8 million (+10.7%),
  • Misc. retail:                 2% of retail sales increased $   16.3 million (+10.2%),
  • Food and beverage:   22% of retail sales increased $   13.0 million (+0.7%), and
  • Sporting & Hobby:       2% of retail sales increased $   4.3 million (+3.2%).
  • Clothing stores:           3% of retail sales declined $   4.9 million (-1.7%).

 

Canada and the Provinces

Eight of 10 provinces reported positive month-over-month (July 2017 vs June 2017) seasonally adjusted retail sales growth. Prince Edward Island led the way at 3.0% growth. Nova Scotia, along with Saskatchewan at +0.7%, tied for 4th. Two provinces reported negative growth: Newfoundland (-1.6%) and Alberta (-0.6%). Canada reported growth at +0.4%. 

All provinces reported positive year-over year (Jul 2017 over Jul 2016) seasonally adjusted retail sales growth.  British Columbia led the way at +12.3%. Nova Scotia (+9.2%) ranked 4th. Canada reported +7.8% growth.

All provinces reported positive year-to-date (Jan-Jul 2017 over Jan-Jul 2016) seasonally adjusted retail sales growth.  British Columbia led the way at +9.3%. Nova Scotia (+6.1%) ranked 6th. Canada reported +6.9% growth.
