RETAIL TRADE, JUNE 2017

 


In Nova Scotia in June 2017 retail sales (seasonally adjusted) increased 1.0% from May 2017 to $1.3 billion and increased 8.1% over June 2016. 

In Canada in June 2017 retail sales (seasonally adjusted) increased 0.1% from May 2017 to $49.0 billion and increased 7.3% over June 2016. 

 

Sectors 

 

In Jan-Jun 2017, Nova Scotia unadjusted retail sales increased 5.9%  ($401.5 million) over Jan-Jun 2016. 

  • Motor vehicle stores:  responsible for  28% of retail sales increased $122.1 million (+6.3%),
  • Gas Stations:              13% of retail sales increased $101.9 million (+12.2%),
  • Building Materials:       7% of retail sales increased $    54.1 million (+12.2%),
  • General merchandise: 12% of retail sales increased $  51.8 million (+6.5%),
  • Health care stores:       8% of retail sales increased $  44.3 million (+8.0%),
  • Furniture stores:          2% of retail sales increased $    9.9 million (+6.9%),
  • Electronic stores:         1% of retail sales increased $   9.0 million (+10.6%),
  • Misc. retail:                 2% of retail sales increased $   7.4 million (+5.6%),
  • Sporting & Hobby:       2% of retail sales increased $   4.2 million (+3.7%), and
  • Food and beverage:   22% of retail sales increased $   2.4 million (+0.2%).
  • Clothing stores:           3% of retail sales declined $   5.7 million (-2.3%).

 

Canada and the Provinces

Five of 10 provinces reported positive month-over-month (June 2017 vs May 2017) seasonally adjusted retail sales growth. British Columbia led the way at 1.9% growth. Nova Scotia at +1.0%, ranked 2nd. Alberta also reported growth at 1.0%. Five provinces reported negative growth: Saskatchewan (-0.1%), Ontario (-0.7%), Prince Edward Island (-2.5%),  New Brunswick (-2.5%) and Manitoba (-3.4%). Canada reported +0.1% growth. 

All provinces reported positive year-over year (Jun 2017 over Jun 2016) seasonally adjusted retail sales growth.  British Columbia led the way at +12.4%. Nova Scotia (+8.1%) ranked 3rd. Canada reported +7.3% growth.

All provinces reported positive year-to-date (Jan-Jun 2017 over Jan-Jun 2016) seasonally adjusted retail sales growth.  British Columbia led the way at +8.8%. Nova Scotia (+5.4%) ranked 6th. Canada reported +6.8% growth.
