Local Government Studies

The Department of Municipal Affairs provides funding to municipalities for studies to facilitate improvements in the efficiency and effectiveness of municipal government service delivery and administration, as well as to promote excellence in local government. The program is used to support local government studies including organizational reviews, viability studies, and municipal software development initiatives carried out by municipalities or the Department of Municipal Affairs in partnership with municipalities, the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities (UNSM) and the Association of Municipal Administrators (AMA).

Municipalities requesting funding for such studies are required to submit a research proposal and budget to the Minister of Municipal Affairs. Proposals are reviewed and evaluated based on the applicant's need and the overall intent and focus of the study.

Funds are disbursed at the discretion of the Minister (subject to funding availability) to municipalities whose funding requests meet the objectives of the program. Grants may be either conditional or unconditional depending upon the nature of the project, and are sometimes awarded on a cost-shared basis. This funding is allocated once the project is completed. For more information on this program, please contact your Municipal Advisor.
